There is a fruitful history in this medieval castle wherein many Kings took over the Hammershus to control Bornholm. In around 500 years, Hammershus was the stronghold of the Island’s various rulers. A century goes, and Hammershus kept its role to defend Bornholm until the end of the 17th Century; when the defenses of Denmark’s eastern territory passed to the defenses on Christiansø and Rønne. Hammershus was finally abandoned in 1743 and the people of Bornholm were free to gather building materials from the site until 1822, since then, the ruins were put on the national historic register.
