Helligdomsklipperne is a famous rock formation that sits along the rocky coast between Tejn and Gudjem. This is considered one of the most prominent landmarks and tourist locations that can only be found in Bornholm.
Helligdomsklipperne is a stunning group of rock formations that turned into Sanctuary Cliffs on the northeast area of Bornholm’s coastline is definitely a place considered an important landmark not just in Bornholm but in the entire Denmark. This stunning view is characterized by high coastal cliffs made of sharp granite. The rock formations originated from the Middle Ages when there was a spring near the coast which attracted pilgrims. As time goes by in particular during the Ice Age, most of the coasts were below sea level but when it ice melted, the island raised leaving some of the parts of Bornholm’s coasts to be 20 meters above sea level. Steep granites are typical in this area of the coast and as years went by, the current appearance of the rocks that turned into cliffs was the result of the hundred years of exposure to different weathers.
Originally, Helligdomsklipperne was considered “holy” due to a chapel situated in the area named “Trefoldighedskapellet” or the Trinity Chapel which was standing originally in the area above the rocks. Down the foot of the cliff, there was a spring of holy water which made the chapel famous and attracted pilgrims with the thought that spring water can cure illnesses, especially on the midsummer night. Back in 1906, tourism started to develop in Bornholm, a hotel named Helligdommen which was situated along the coastline was bought by a German. Since then, tourism in Bornholm became more diverse after a coastal path was opened alongside the cliffs in order to ensure public access to the area. From then on, visitors and tourists increased up to this date.
Helligdomsklipperne is famous for its breathtaking view and amazing experience of going through special cave spiders that could reach up to 60 meters deep caves.
